The Northeast Arkansas Regional Transportation Planning Commission (N.A.R.T.P.C.) is proceeding with the second phase of the Safe Transportation for Every Pedestrian (STEP) Innovation Study involving Highway 91.
The Highway 91 STEP Study includes installing a temporary pedestrian crossing near the intersection of Highway 91 (E. Johnson Avenue) and State Street to help increase public safety. This location was previously identified as a high volume area due to its connection between Arkansas State University and Downtown Jonesboro. Consultants will be monitoring usage of the temporary crossing as well as public response and motor vehicle behavior. In conjunction, a Highway 141 STEP Study identifying pedestrian and bicyclist safety issues and potential countermeasures along Highway 141 (North Church Street) between Allen Avenue and Alpine Street is nearing completion, and will be presented to City Council once finalized.
“We encourage members of the public to exercise patience and stay vigilant while navigating on the road. It’s our duty as a community to help ensure that everyone can arrive to their destination safely regardless of mode of travel,” said MPO Director, Cecelie Cochran.
